The main cockroach species found in Canada include German cockroaches, American cockroaches, Oriental cockroaches, and Brown-banded cockroaches. Other species, such as Pennsylvania wood cockroaches and Turkestan cockroaches, may also occur in certain regions or circumstances. German cockroaches are especially common in indoor infestations, including homes, apartments, restaurants, and commercial kitchens.

German cockroaches can contaminate food, utensils, and surfaces as they move through infested areas. They may carry bacteria mechanically and leave droppings, shed skins, and saliva that can trigger allergies and worsen asthma symptoms, particularly in children and sensitive individuals. They reproduce rapidly, making early treatment important.

American cockroaches are among the largest cockroach species encountered in Canada. They often inhabit warm, damp environments such as basements, drains, boiler rooms, and commercial buildings. They can contaminate food and surfaces, spread microorganisms mechanically, and contribute to unpleasant odours and unsanitary conditions when infestations become established.

Oriental cockroaches prefer cool, damp locations such as drains, crawl spaces, basements, and areas around leaking pipes. They can contaminate food and household surfaces and may carry bacteria from unsanitary environments. Heavy infestations can also produce unpleasant odours and contribute to poor indoor hygiene.

Brown-banded cockroaches can infest bedrooms, living rooms, offices, and other relatively dry indoor areas. They hide in furniture, cupboards, electrical appliances, and cracks, making them difficult to detect. Like other cockroaches, they can contaminate surfaces and food, while their droppings and shed body parts may aggravate allergies and asthma.

Store food in sealed containers, clean spills and crumbs promptly, remove rubbish regularly, fix plumbing leaks, and seal cracks and entry points. Avoid leaving standing water or food debris overnight. If you notice live cockroaches, droppings, egg cases, or recurring sightings, professional cockroach control can help identify the species, target hiding places, and reduce the risk of reinfestation.
